We love growing our own vegetables, especially big beefsteak and oxheart "heirloom" tomatoes. But the fruit were still green late in the UK season when we sowed seeds in March indoors. We tried ordering grafted plants online in April with disappointing results from mass-produced plugs, or titchy plants typically sold in small 8-9cm (0.5 litre) pots and poor quality compost. Now we sow much earlier and maintain a night-time temperature above 10°C to make sure we have the sweetest possible tomatoes ripening in midsummer.
